From diagnosis, to treatment, to cardiac rehabilitation, your generosity is “at the heart” of the stellar level of care our Heart Institute team provides.

Cardiac Care Close to Home

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for American men and women, claiming the lives of more than 650,000 people a year – 1 in every 4 deaths. In most of these cases, conditions such as arrhythmia, stroke, coronary heart disease, heart attack, and heart failure, were entirely preventable.

The St. Joseph Hospital Heart Institute is nationally recognized for its rapid response time; from arrival to medication to surgical intervention, within 80 minutes on average. The national goal is no more than 90 minutes. This “STEMI” designation means that in a cardiac emergency, ambulances bypass any other facilities in our region and rush patients to St. Joseph.

To continue to excel in lifesaving measures, the cardiac care team is in need of a critical equipment upgrade. While our patients have long benefitted from the latest technology – thanks to donors like you – many tools have come to the end of use and must be replaced.

From diagnosis, to treatment, to cardiac rehabilitation, your generosity is “at the heart” of the stellar level of care our team provides.

A Life Saved

Our Equipment Needs

Cardiac flow probe/meter

Goal: $110,000

Flow probes measure blood flow in blood vessels throughout the circulatory system. Electromagnetic flow equipment provides the most accurate measurement (in vivo) of blood flow available, both for acute and chronic implants.

Phillips Intrasight7 “Volcano”

Goal: $200,000

The IntraSight System is used for the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of vascular morphology in the coronary arteries and vessels of the peripheral vasculature.

Cath Lab Replacement

Goal: $1,500,000

A cath lab is where tests and procedures including ablation, angiogram, angioplasty and implantation of pacemakers / ICDs are carried out. Our Cath Lab is in need of updating to ensure quality care for years to come.

Every Minute Counts

When McKinleyville resident Wayne Caldwell realized he was having a heart attack, it was almost too late.

He lost consciousness as his wife Donna called 9-1-1. Wayne credits the STEMI designation of our Cardiac Care program for saving his life. The medical team of professionals from ambulance to emergency room to cath lab gives lifesaving treatment to critical patients like Wayne faster than the national standard. Every minute counts.

This dramatic life event deepened the Caldwells’ ties to our hospital; they are now heavily engaged donors and champions of St. Joseph’s world class local healthcare.
