Destination Humboldt
Attracting the best and brightest clinicians and addressing the urgent need for better access to care
Tackling the Physician Shortage through Philanthropy
Even with the tremendous progress to date of this groundbreaking initiative-begun in Humboldt and being duplicated in other Providence ministries-we still face access challenges.
Focus of the Destination Humboldt Initiative:
Physician Recruitment, Retention and Clinician Wellbeing
We’re asking you to assist us in addressing the physician shortage head-on by providing the necessary resources to compete for the best and brightest clinicians. We’ll focus resources on physician recruitment and retention through incentives such as:
- Loan repayment assistance
- Aid with relocation costs
- Leadership development
- Wellness support
- Family establishment in the community and more
Incentives will be given in exchange for multi-year commitments to practicing in the region.
Your support will help bring more doctors, nurses, technicians, and support staff, while honoring and retaining those who have already dedicated their careers to the people of the North Coast.

Early Success - Impact of Destination Humboldt Donor Dollars
Since April of 2023, this community has generously responded to our pilot program of utilizing philanthropy funds for Physician Recruitment & Retention by donating more than $1.3M toward Destination Humboldt.
This has resulted in the successful recruitment of more than a dozen new providers and played a key role in retaining several current providers through funding of needed equipment to expand services.
Early success of Destination Humboldt means that as many as 9,000 members of our community could be served by a Primary Care provider. This not only improves these individual patients’ health and wellbeing, but the far-reaching benefits are also felt by patients’ families, communities and the operations of our local health systems as well.
SUPPORT OUR WORK
Now, more than ever, our community needs Providence St. Joseph Hospital Eureka and compassionate neighbors like you.
